GAKI ZOSHI

The Scroll of Starving Ghosts

The starving ghosts inhabit a space between Hell and the Realm of Humans, among whom they can mingle invisibly. For their misspent lives they suffer unappeasable hunger and thirst, which drives them to seek their food in graveyards and their water at holy wells, from which they cannot drink.
Japan, 12th century

THINGS THAT ARE INTERESTING
  • heretics
  • Nazi art looting and subsequent provenance issues
  • iconoclasm
  • the sky
  • how many chapters of the KKK there still are, and how they don't all get along
  • small fires

THINGS THAT ARE BORING
  • Architecture
  • Archaeology
  • reading about Architecture and Archaeology
  • my painting teacher's art
  • walking
  • my problems
Well, Charlie Brown, another Halloween has come and gone. I blew it. I let down Siouxsie and Samhain alike. No Devil's Night, no Day of the Dead either. I think it's ok if I pretend many other days are Halloween. Still I will plan all week, I will plan all month, I will plan all year for the next one...

yesterday i saw a man with eyebrows like the ones frida kahlo always painted herself with

today a piece was cut out of me and put in a jar
that's not a metaphor but it could be.

This still makes me so very happy, even through my pinched and grouchy sinus haze

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

The other day I thought I saw Siouxsie on a magazine cover. I went for a closer look and it was Martha Stewart.
May God have mercy on my soul.

I had a dream last night that I went to Disneyland before work one morning, but it wasn't Disneyland. You know how that is in dreams. Admission was free because it was snowing. There was a giant snowglobe that had frozen. I ran through the park to something, I don't quite know what it was, but there were snowballs. I was late to work after that.

I wasn't looking but i came across some halloween poems by creepy children, republished here without permission. Aileen could teach Atacia a thing or two.

Bushes quiver
where shadows lean,
and not a sliver
of moon is seen.

Near the river
some goblins (green)
with a witch in front
and a ghost in between

Make me sh..i..vvvver,
but I am keen
about the shivers
of Halloween.

~Aileen Fisher~

On a spooky Halloween night,
When Goblins and witches come out to fight,
When children go out to say "Trick or Treat",
When goblins and witches and people meet.
Around the town loud noises roar,
And when you hear the sound,
"Knocking" at your door.
Should you open it?
Should you be scared?
Trick or Treaters are everywhere!
But don't you worry,
And don't you fright,
Its only one day,
One evening,
Its Halloween Night!

~Atacia~

P.S. I am thirteen years old, but I wrote this last year when I was twelve.

"She put on her bathing suit and swallowed a tubeful of tranquilizers. Then she swam far toward the open sea. She thought the tablets would make her very tired and she would drown."

The 25th Amendment had only been used twice before this week. It is a lovely and morbid amendment...necessary, and maybe not lovely. Lovelier than the president's innards, to be sure.
See: "When the President is the Patient," which at the Mütter Museum is accompanied by a jarred abscess, formerly belonging to Grover Cleveland before it was secretly removed, on a yacht, from his jaw.

P.S. I hate you Linda Black. You ruined my day. Now leave us alone.

I hope it isn't too late

Saturday, June 30, 2007

I went to K-mart, which I should have known would break my heart.
I walked by a man at the edge of the shoe section, who was sitting and looking down at his feet. One was in a blue shoe, and the other foot was next to a black shoe. Canvas slip-ons. He was wearing glasses. What does it mean that I had to fight back tears as I walked towards the home storage aisles?
Maybe he reminded me of my dad. Glasses and sandy hair.
I passed him again and told myself not to look, but there he was, wearing both black shoes and standing up to look at them oh god
Some days I'm just ripped to pieces by the fragility of humanity and I love everyone and I try not to cry on the subway and I come home and listen to Glen Campbell.

THE TRUTH ABOUT GHOSTS

1. The only people who end up ghosts are MURDERED.

2. Some ghosts like Dad dont know they are murdered until after they die but they always find out.

3. All ghosts get the Terrors.

4. The Terrors can only stop when ghosts stop being ghosts.

5. Ghosts can only stop being ghosts when they get Revenge.

6. Ghosts can only get their Revenge when the murderer is killed.

7. Not all the Living can see ghosts only some of the Living and they are mostly the children of the ghosts.

8. If the Living dont take Revenge in the No Time the ghosts stay ghosts for ever.

supercallifragilisticexpialidocious

so i bought a doughnut and went to the cemetery

I didn't think I liked this Marnie Weber person but now I know I do. Yesterday I sat on a haybale and giggled at her pixellated movie about the Spirit Girls, "a group of ghost girls searching for a place to perform their songs and tell their stories." I think one of the Spirit Girls was really a Spirit Boy.
She also made the cover for Sonic Youth's A Thousand Leaves.
OK!

revel in your moth holes,
it's a WHO DO YOU WANT TO PUNCH afternoon!

i want to punch the snobbish apple store in soho for selling only Little of Use and Mostly Foolish Items, and the girl on the train whose overbearing Victorian hair was much too near me. because of her I concluded that hipsters are really ugly people who attach so many things to themselves that one can't tell.

i miss my partner in crime.

other than all that, i feel wonderful. it is a beautiful day in crown heights, the sidewalk trash and stray cats are bathed in golden sunlight, the weeds are growing up green in the vacant lot, and there is ice cream melting on the stoop.

Monday, April 16, 2007
